It is estimated that 90% of diseases are caused by stress. Yet stress is normal. Its a normal physical and emotional way we respond to pressure. We all have stress. So what can we do? First of all be aware of things, situations and people that cause you stress. Then consider making changes where you can. But what about what you can't change? Good news! There are many things you can do to help your body manage that stress. Here are just a few of the many easy steps you can take to stay healthy in spite of stress. Exercise Exercise is a great way to ease stress. It helps your body produce endorphins -- the neurotransmitters in your brain that make you feel good. Laugh Watch a funny movie, or watch some funny animal videos - whatever makes you laugh. When you laugh increased oxygen rushes to your organs, blood flow increases, and stress is relieved. Even thinking about laughing is enough to lower your stress hormone levels. Pet Your Pet Have a pet? Petting your pet even for just a few minutes causes your body to release hormones like serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin. It also decreases damaging stress hormones which can result in a boost in immunity. Get Organized Even if you think you don't have time to clean up that clutter, or you may think it doesn't bother you - think again. An uncluttered space creates a satisfying and relaxing atmosphere. It clears your head. So de-clutter and de-stress and burn over 250 calories an hour doing it. Add Vitamin C Vitamin C lowers levels of stress hormones and as an added bonus boosts your immune system. Vitamin C-rich foods include orange juice, grapefruit juice, strawberries, sweet red peppers as well as dark leafy greens, broccoli and many more. But that's not all, you can also take a deep breath, chew some gum, think about things that make you calm and happy, smile and the list goes on. The important thing is that you don't ignore it- just do what you can do knowing that every little bit helps, to keep you healthy.
